Using Word as Outlook editor with same version#

I have read over many posts on this board to first see if I found an answer
to my situation but didn't come across one. I am using Office XP Standard
for Students and Teachers Version 2002. Both Word and Outlook are version
2002. After selecting the appropriate boxes to instruct Outlook to use Word
to edit email messages, upon starting a new email, I receive "This form
requires Word as your email editor but Word is either busy or cannot be
found. The form will be opened in the Outlook editor instead"; Outlook then
proceeds to uncheck the box for "Use Microsoft Word to edit e-mail messages"
each time.

Is there a resolution for this in this version of Office?
Thank you for any assistance.

Have you applied all relevant service packs for Office XP?

Thank you for your reply. Well, I have now (installed all relevant updates).
I had to reformat my hard drive but this was an issue before the reformat.
I thought I had downloaded all relevant updates but there were still a couple
that according to MS.com were still needed. So, I am now all updated. After
I rebooted (and hoped for the best) I started Outlook and initiated a new
email. It was actually starting Word as the editor (I received the "starting
word..." message) but just as quickly as my excitement elevated, I was again
looking at the error given below and Outlook proceeded to open the new
message using the Outlook editor.

After reading other posts on this discussion, a thought (probably a crazy
one) came to mind: my PC came with a "trial version" of MS Office 2003 but
I'm not using this (naturally since I have the Student and Teachers ed.).
When I log onto MS.com to check for updates I'm assuming that the scan "sees"
that I have this software and this is why it is suggesting me to install some
updates that don't apply to me (e.g.: Office 2003 Service Pack 1 (English
version)). Is it possible that Outlook (2002) is referring to the Word
version 2003 when it starts the editor rather than Word version 2002 from the
students and teachers edition and is getting confused?
Just a thought...
Thanks again for any assistance.

Very possible.
There appear to be a whole host of causes for this error message. Most have
no solution. Here are a few that do:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q284900
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q319796
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q196871
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q223934

In the most refractory of cases, you can try this at your own risk:
Get the Windows Installer Cleanup utility from Microsoft.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

Then uninstall Word and run the installer cleanup utility to remove anything
that has Word in it and\or remove information from any previous version of
Microsoft Office. Reboot. Then re-install Word. Reboot. Then run Office
Detect and Repair. Reboot.

To use the Windows installer cleanup utility to remove Word:
1. Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Windows Install Clean
Up.
2. In the list of installed programs, click Word or the earlier Office
installation, and then click Remove.
3. When the removal process is completed, click OK, and then click Exit.

Thanks for the great info/available options. I would like to try one of
these options but any of the one's that appear to be worth trying require
uninstalling Office (the one I'm using). I'm not sure I want to go there
just yet as I JUST called MS help line to get another activation code for my
MS Office, (S & T edition), to reinstall it after reformatting the hard
drive. The call wasn't a hassle and that was the first time I had to call
for this. Reinstalling would require another call which leads to my concern:
do they (MS) at some point say "you're cut off, no more activation codes for
you" (or do they start charging)? Anyway, I'd still like to try one of these
options and probably eventually will. Thanks again. I'll most definintely
post something if one of them works!

This problem ("This form requires Word . . .") appears to have happened to me
as a result of a Windows issue. I restarted my computer one day and saw that
my login name had changed from "Dave" to "Owner". On this same day the
Outlook/Word problem started. There didn't seem to be any other problems.

I followed the procedure in Q319796 before I came across Russ's post, even
though the conditions in Q319796 were not exactly the same as mine. I also
tried Repairing Office and also reinstalled Office. These steps did not solve
the problem.

So I used System Restore to try to return the computer to the state it was
before my login name changed. Every time I tried System Restore, it ended up
telling me that the restore could not be completed, and that my computer was
not being changed. I tried this 4 or 5 times, stepping back a day at a time,
each time getting the unsuccessful result message. However, I then noticed
that my taskbar had changed, that the quick launch icons were not shown, and
when I showed them, they were in a different order than I had put them in. So
I assume that System Restore did work, even though Windows told me it didn't.
And so far (KNOCKING LIKE HELL ON WOOD) the Outlook/Word problem has not
recurred.

Not sure how helpful this is . . .

Dave

After trying a number of suggestions contained in this posting and having the
same issue, I simply did the following which resolved the issue for my user:
Within Control Panel, switched to Classic View
Opened the Mail icon
Created a new profile, named it after the end-user's first name
Marked radio button always use this profile
*I did not delete the original Outlook profile, I merely created a new
profile*
Closed all open windows
Launched Outlook
Verified that the checkmark was set as a default in the box for "Use
Microsoft Word to edit e-mail messages"; it was.
Opened an email message
Clicked on Reply
Everything opened as is should; good to go!
