Before you got the new Vista computer, how did you send emails?
Who is your email service provider? Or to ask that question another way,
what is the part of your email address after the @ symbol?
Your email provider will typically have a web page that shows how to
set up an email program. If you need more help, tell us the name of
your email service provider.

Hi,
I have the same problem. My service provider is verizon/yahoo. I also went
to Windows mail to see if I could find the problem & all of my mail from
verizon/yahoo jumped into Windows mail. I do not want it there. #1. How can
I get my mail back on to Verizon and #2. how do I fix the error so that
Windows can send mail?
I don't really want to use Windows mail at all, but it comes up when trying
to email a web page to someone. Is that enough info for you to help me ?
Thanks.
Jaye

When you click on a MailTo link on a web page, or try to send a web
page to an email recipient, Windows calls up the default email program.
Yahoo claims they have a fix that will set their webmail as the default:

http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/settings/settings-10.html

It was developed for Windows XP, and frankly, I doubt it works in Vista.
Sorry, I haven't tried it since I don't use webmail. If it doesn't work, be
sure to complain to Yahoo.

There is no feasible way to return the downloaded emails to the Yahoo
server. About all you can do is forward them one at a time.

If you still want to set up Windows Mail, you may want to give Verizon
tech support a call. Verizon's mail support website is a mess and difficult
to figure out: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/verizon/mail/

I used to go to the local library and use their public computers. My e-mail
address is @hotmail.co.uk. I definitely need more help!

I understand that when you click on an email link on a web page,
you get that error message. Does Windows Live Mail work for
you otherwise? Can you send and receive from it?

To correct the error message you get:
Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
"Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on "Windows
Live Mail". If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.

My email functionality has been apparently crippled. I use xp with IE7 but
this apparently pertains to vista more so. I need to be able to choose a
given email provide as default in IE/tools/internet options/ programs/email
like I was able to do for years and years. In my case I use Yahoo!mail.
It has not been just up there as an option I have always had to go to the
trouble of downloading an application, usually burried in some junky tool bar
or messenger program.. but that is besides the point and on their end. Yahoo
customer support has just told me that microsoft has disabled the code that
allows us to be able to choose our default email program, so their app. is
rendered useless. IS this the case? If so why and who do I contact to try to
convince to change this? The consequences for me are that I cannot forward
web pages or links from a given webpage, nor can I mail to readily from web
links. This is a real hassle. I imagine there may be politics, legality, or
money behind this. I just need functionality restored to my online world.
Please let me know where else I might post my woes, and update me with any
potential fixes.
