Using View Side by Side on dual screen display in Word 2007

Kev

I use a laptop for all my work. When working just on the laptop things are
fine. The problem I have is when I then dock the laptop in the office.

In this situation I have two displays, the laptop as the primary and a
second screen acting as a second display - ie the desktop is stretched across
the two displays. In this situation I generally doing all my editing on the
second display.

When I open a document in Word it starts up automatically on the second
display no problem. However, as soon as I select the 'View Side by Side'
option it always moves the documents to the laptop display. I then have to
manually move and resize the documents onto the second display to continue
working side by side.

As soon as I cancel side by side then the documents automatically jump back
to their original positions on the second display.

Any suggestions for getting 'View Side by Side' to work on the second display?

Many thanks,
Kev

Hey there! I'm aware this is an old thread but I've started to work just like Kev recently (a laptop to which I connect an external, bigger, monitor) and I also have been experiencing the 'View Side by Side on the Laptop monitor' issue... and it was bugging me to no end...

And today it seems I got it working as I want: When I choose the 'View Side by Side' option the documents remain in the second monitor. :D
So I wanted to share this to help others in the same situation.

Here's what I think did the trick:
  1. Open 2 docs and select 'View Side by Side'. Their windows should move to the primary monitor.
  2. Drag the windows to the secondary display and resize.
  3. Then un-select 'View Side by Side'.

That's it! The last step, after moving & resizing, probably makes Word "save" the position and sizes of the windows in the 2nd monitor as the correct way to 'View Side by Side'.

Hope this helps someone! :thumb:
