Using the spacebar is deleting my text in Word instead of adding.

Previously when I wanted to insert some extra spaces between words, I used
the spacebar. Now all of a sudden when I press the spacebar inbetween two
words it deletes the next character to the right, if I press it 5 times, 5
characters are deleted.
 
Press the Insert key on the keyboard to come out of Insert or Overtype mode.
 
Add to this, you can see whether you're in insert or
overwrite mode by looking at the status bar at the bottom.
Look for the letters "OVR" = overwrite. If it's greyed
out, you're in insert mode. If it's in black, you're in
overwrite mode.
