Using styles in 2007 word

I realize there are many style threads re: 2007 Word already, but I can't
quite find what I am looking for...

After about a year of using 07, I'm still having a terrible time with the
navigation and UI of the styles functionality in Word. In the 03 Version,
when I was formatting large docs with 50+ styles, there was a handy styles
drop down in the upper left corner of the screen. I could click into that,
and then type the letter "s" and would immediately be taken to the styles
begging with "s" and then I could arrow down and select the one I want. Very
quick and effortless. With 07, I have to open the styles pane, (which
consumes what - 20% of the screen?) and then manually use the scroll bar to
get to the style I want, and then select it. It may seem trivial, but when
you have to do this for every style change in a 500+ page document, and you
have to scroll through 50+ styles every time (and yes I use them all), it
becomes more than time consuming. It creates a situation where you want to
dig your heart out with a teaspoon because it's so frustrating.

Is there any way to restore the 03 functionality? Or any other suggestions?
And please don't suggest the format paint brush, because that is just as
time consuming.

Thanks

You can add that functionality to your quick access toolbar. From commands
not in toolbar, choose Style -- the one that says when you hover over it
"Style(StyleGalleryClassic)".
