Using old license after upgrade

I plan to upgrade to Vista when it comes out. When I upgrade does it
automatically deactivate my XP? Can I then use my XP upgrade disk to upgrade
my second computer from ME and activate it againwithout difficulty? Not well
stated but the gist is I would own 3 windows licenses (ME, XP, VISTA) and I
want to use the XP and Vista licenses.

Don' t do that. Vista uses 5x more RAM than XP, is only half as fast,
has less features (except ultimate edition), supports less drivers and
costs even more. Even current webcams and scanners are not supported
(yet). Games are unplayable at half the framerate than you got on XP.

Wait at least till SP1 is out. Most of these problems will be fixed
until then (I think).

Most important:

Vista claims to support 2000/XP drivers and installs them fine, but the
device just does not work. Device manager claims everything is ok, but
it' s in fact not!

If you want to be legal about it; an upgrade o/s includes the original
qualifying product as a part of the licence
Vista in its original release incarnation was draconian with regard its
licence. ie An oem licence, once you had changed two major hw items it
required a new, purchased licence for Vista.
Who knows how they configured the final release, If I was MS I would be
configuring a Vista upgrade to check the licence of the QP, and if that QP
had allready been used in an upgrade to deny the install. - but perhaps I'm
being cynical

OK, thanks for your responses. I do have the hardware to run Vista. I will
have to check out whether any of my equipment would be affected by an upgrade
as far as drivers are concerned. If my upgrade is via a full copy rather
than an upgrade disc my original license should be free to use again.

A full copy of Vista is not an upgrade copy and does not need XP on the
computer to be installed therefore XP is free to be installed on another
machine.
An upgrade copy of Vista needs XP installed....not just on a CD/DVD but
fully installed and activated....and as such you cannot use XP on another
machine.

What is the source for your figures?

What were you smoking when you wrote this?
