Using OL express as a news reader

Paul.

I have just upgraded to Office 2003 from Office XP. OS is XP Pro.

In OL 2002 I used to have News as a menu item which would run OL express as
just a news reader ie. no inbox or mail accounts. This option seems to have
disappeared and I cant seem to get it back.

Is there a shortcut I can add to the desktop to open OL express just as a
news reader? What command string would I use?

Hope this group is OK to answer questions on Office.

Thanks.

Paul.

Paul.

If you try in microsoft.public.outlook and microsoft.public.outlook.general
you'll see LOADS of posts about this.

start-control panel-network internet-internet options-programs-then make
newsgroups use outlook express.
then in outlook 2003 right click a blank area in the toolbar and click
customize. scroll down to go menu on left and click that. the news command
will be on right side about 1/2 way down. drag that to the toolbar you want,
I placed it right on top .
then click news and you will be prompted if you want to use outlook as your
default newsreader. you MUST pick NO or you will have to go thru these steps
again.

Right click on the Outlook Express icon | choose properties | the path reads " "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" " add this to the end of the path /outnews | the path now reads "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /outnews.

The quotes remain, there is a space after the last quote mark. Send to desktop (create shortcut), or put it in your quicklaunch.

Make a shortcut with the command line
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /news

Not that it save all that much - but you do enter it in the news
account. You can then perhaps usefully drag it into the Quicklaunch
bar
