Using "Insert Auto Text" in headers and footers

I would like to insert the file name of the document when I print it. I
should be able to do this by going to Headers & Footers and selecting "Insert
Auto Text" and then selecting 'file name,' but the "Insert Auto Text" is
grayed out and can't be selected. When I try to go the "Insert" window,
there is nothing to choose from under "Auto Text." How do I fix this? I
am using Word 2000. Thanks

Hi, Vannuzza. In Word, click on Tools | Options | File Locations, and note
the folder for User Templates. Close Word, rename the normal.dot file in the
User Templates folder to normal.old or normal.temp or something else, and
start Word (Word will automatically create a new normal.dot file). Can you
insert AutoText now? If so, then the problem was a damaged normal.dot
template. If desired, you can click on Tools | Templates and Addins |
Organizer, and copy your customizations from your renamed normal.dot to the
new normal.dot.

The autotext button on the header toolbar only offers autotexts in the
paragraph style of the current header style at the cursor. You can access
the rest of the autotexts from insert > autotext > autotext

Hi, garfield-n-odie,
Your advice proved to be right-on-the-money. I did what you said and I now
have a functioning Word application! Thanks!

Hi Graham,
It turns out that my normal.dot template was corrupted. I did try accessing
the "Insert Auto Text" from the Insert window, but there was nothing there.
Restoring a good normal.dot template file fixed the problem. Thanks for
replying.

I suspect it wasn't necessarily corruption you encountered. Missing
AutoText entries are a symptom of a Word document saved as Normal.dot.

In the event you modified a Word document and saved it as Normal.dot
then that isn't the proper way to modify your Normal.dot. As you found
you will end up with missing AutoText entries and the
Tools/AutoCorrect dialog will not function as you expect either.

Instead you should open your Normal.dot and make your modifications.
