Using field contents as criteria in update query

Hi,
I need to be able to use the data in a field as the criteria for a query,
I want to be able to click on a button on a form, on a single record, and an update will be done to only that perticular record.
Simple Example:

I click a button to lower the stock of an item by one, the ID of the item is being used as the criteria for the update query.

I feel this may be a simple issue for someone in the know, please help.
