Using domain credentials on a workgroup network

I have a laptop (XPpro) that is a member of a active directory domain. I
connected it to a non-domain network, enabled the necessary protocol
configurations and tried to access the workgroup network. On the "Server"
machine (a XP pro box with shared folders) I created a user account w/ the
same user name and password as those used on the domain. When I tried to
access the shared folders the box dispalyed a logon dialogue and would not
accept the credentials for the added user. When I enter the name and
password I get a ballon saying: "The user name you typed is the same as the
user name you logged in with. That user name has already been tried. A
domain controller cannot be found to verify that name." If I enter a
different set of credentials that are valid for the shares then explorer
accesses the share just fine. Can any one explain why I can't use the same
credentials on both the domain and the work group?

Because the credentials are not the same.

If your username is "mike"... on both systems...

Then the credentials on the domain are :
domainname\mike

The credentials on the machine in question (in the workgroup) are :
machinename\mike

That simple.
