Using COUNT in a spreadsheet

I'm developing a spreadsheet and one of the functions I
need is for the values in a column be counted. I have
found that COUNT will indeed count the number of cells
within a prescribed range BUT it counts cells with a zero
the same as if it were a data value. I know there must be
a way/function that will count my range and exclude the
zero cells - anybody out there willing to help me out here
with my simple problem? Thanks in advance.
