using a vista lap top how can I print on my xp pc?

I have tried everything I can think of and I keep getting a message access
deinied when I try to add a network printer. I can see them and they come up
in the list when windows searches for printers on the network but as soon as
I try to use it I get the access denied and there is no explanation at all. I
have it set up do the printers are shared that are connected to the xp
computer ( I have an hp photo printer 8250 and a lexmark 2580 all in one)
I have 2 lap tops bth running vista and the printers are connected to the
computer running xp
I have come to a page several times that asks for a user name and password
which I never set up so there is no way of knowing what it is.
I have been going crazy trying to do this, if anyine can help please email
me at (e-mail address removed)

Glorianne,

Are you trying to add the printer, using standard add printer wizard? Try
adding a locally redirected printer port.

Have a read of the above about file and printer sharing in Vista.

You say you get a log in window; but when?
Try going into vista Network and Sharing, and turn off password protected
sharing

While you are in the above network and sharing, add a Network Printer from
there. You don't want to share a printer with vista's users, you want to
browse to XP's printer.
