Users hang on to files on server

Hi
Can you help with this problem?

If users open a file on the server, it shows as being open for write & read
in the Shared Folders, Open Files display in Computer Management, System
Tools.

Quite often, users will complain that they can't open a file (eg an Excel
file) because someone else has it open. Sometimes that can be themselves!
When I look on the server they have it open for Read. If they log off, then
log back on, the file then becomes free.

The server is W2k, the clients are 98, the DCs are NT4. There are no
restrictions on share or NTFS, Everyone has full control.

Thanks for your help
Steve

Does this happen with Excel files only? I've seen this problem before - it
has to do with something set in Excel on that file...might want to post in
an Excel group if nobody else in here has the answer.

No - its Word files also. People have to keep logging off and on just to get
access to their files, its most annoying. Would it improve if I set up
global groups and applied them to the shared folders?

How are your NTFS permissions set up now? I wouldn't think that would be the
issue, as either they have access or they don't....

The NTFS permissions are to allow Everyone Full Control.

Some users also have a problem with their systems apparently hanging when
they try to open files from the shared area. It takes a minute or two to
open a small Excel file, during which time Excel shows in Task Manager (the
98 equivalent) as "not responding".
