It happens all the time. While doing tech support I could not keep track of
how many people would forget thier username and password. My favorite was a
president of a company I worked for who could not remember his password,
when I reminded him of it and he tried to enter it in, he kept mis spelling
it. This was the same password he had used for almost a year. And to make
matters worse, it was the first name of his oldest daughter, no I'm not
joking. So when some one says they forgot thier username or password, it's
not so far fetched as you may think.
To the OP, what version of XP are you using, Home or Pro.
You can try logging on as administrator, using nothing as a password.
If you did not set the admin password then that should get you in.
