User Profile Delete

I deleted a user profile called "Unknown User", and all of the folders in MY
user profile (which is definitely NOT named Unknown or anything close to
that) were erased, can not find them. Judging from the other posts with user
profiles in the subject I do not have high hopes for recovery, but can
someone please explain why this happened? I also lost my desktop.

Have you tried a System Restore to a date before your problem?

According to:-

http://www.windowsdevcenter.com/pub/a/windows/2004/10/19/SystemRestore.html

it includes "local user profiles"

thanks for the suggestion, but on reading the web page there is a sentance
that does not look hopeful:
"And here are some things that System Restore does not restore:
* any user-created data stored in local user profiles on the machine"
What i want most is the data files that were in my "Documents and
Settings\<name>\My Documents" folder, which is gone, gone, gone....

You are quite right that System Restore does not restore your data. Stop
using the machine immediately; the longer you work with it the greater
the chance that your data will be overwritten and lost forever. The
data may be retrievable with specialized recovery software. There are
some freeware products - and I'll give you some links. I've never used
them since I do tech for a living and have professional data recovery
software; however that is very expensive.

It takes patience and skill to retrieve data using recovery software.
You may want to have a professional computer repair shop do it for you
(not your local version of BigStoreUSA). Not all professionals do data
recovery; call around. If you don't have anyone local, a professional
data recovery company like DriveSavers (or others) can get your data;
the cost is not inexpensive but only you can determine the value of
your data.

Hello caseyb554,

You were "Unknown User" before You changed your name to whatever appeared
on welcome screen.

When you change user name in Control Panel>User Accounts, it changes a name
on welcome screen and set permitions accordingly, but does not change path of
%USERPROFILE%. That is the name of your files folder.

I doubt you will recover it even with erased files recovery tools. Certainly
not everything.
