I am tring to open user accounts that has password protection. They are my
kids accounts and they have put passwords on there accounts and I and my
wife are the admin. We did not put the prerental controls on. Is there a way
to remove or see the passwords without deleting the file or user
perferances.

Hi,

You can change or remove their passwords from the Users applet in the
Control Panel. You cannot see their passords using any tool native to
Windows.

To prevent kids from revising passwords, use Computer> Manage> Local Users
and Groups> Users. Right-click on the account you want to change, check
Properties, then "User cannot change password".

You can also change the password there. You can do the same in Control
Panel, but that approach cannot prevent them from changing it.

The information loss risk seems minimal. According to the help screen
accessed from the pop-up message:

===========
To keep protected information secure, after a password is reset on a local
user account, some types of information are no longer accessible, including
the following:
E-mail that is encrypted with the user's public key
Internet passwords that are saved on the computer
Files that the user has encrypted
===========

My interpretation is that non-encrypted info is not lost. I appreciate
corroboration from other respondents because it's useful information to me,
too.
