User Name on a Discussion Form

Gene

Hello.

I'm having a problem with the user name field on a
discussion form. I can get it to appear, but it does not
have a value. It's blank. Other fields work, such as
remote computer name which does correctly show the IP
address. I'm using FrontPage 2002 on a company intranet
site with all users authenticated on Windows domain.
What I would like to see/capture is the domain/username.
I created the discussion web using the discussion web
wizard.

I also tried setting up a hidden field on the advanced
form properties tab, to set the variable "name" equal
to "%username%" (the system variable). It doesn't set it
to the value of %username, only the word "%username%".
Can this be done, and what is the correct syntax?

Thanks for your help. Gene.

The username field will only contain data if remove
anonymous access from the Web site, thus forcing visitors
to login. No login, no username.

Thanks.

Do you know of way to capture the author's
domain/usersname? The one they logged onto the network
with? Thanks.

You would have to use ASP, however then you can't use the FP Discussion web.

No. If it were possible to snoop this information without making
the visitors login, it would be a major security exposure, and
the browser vendors would immediately stop it from working.

Think about it. Would you want every site on the Internet
learning your username? Especially when about a third of
all passwords are first names, initials, or one of those
followed by a month number?

However, if all the following are true:

o Your visitors log into a Windows domain that the Web
server trusts.
o You remove anonymous access.
o You grant access to Domain Users.
o In IIS Manager, you make sure that Integrated Windows
Authentication is in effect.

then Internet Explorer will log the visitor in automatically,
and a discussion Web will record a non-empty username.

Of course, this scenario is much more likely on an intranet
than on the global Internet.

I turned off anonymous access and the remote user field
is now populated. Your comments make total sense. I'm
fortunate to be working in a controlled environment.
Thanks for your's and everyone else's help. I appreciate
it. --Gene.
