User Interface has encountered a problem

After installing Defender every time I start up my machine or try to run
Windows Defender I get the following message "Windows Defender User Interface
has encountered a problem and needs to close". Error Signature is AppNAme
msascui.exe AppVer 1.1.1347.0 ModName gdiplus.dll ModVer 5.1.3102.2180 Offset
000bafff

As I can see MsMpEng.exe listed under processes I assume Defender is
running but I have no interface to it (I have never had any messages from
Defender).

I have tried reinstalling but to no avail.

I am running Windows XP Home version 2002 with SP2 and all updates applied.

Can anyone help with rectifying this problem?

I would run sfc /scannow to make sure your system files are intact.
