User cannot shutdown from start menu?

Andrew Story

Hello Peeps,

All users not an admin cannot shutdown from the start menu, all they have is
'logoff'. If they logoff first though, then they can shutdown from the
ctrl+alt+del screen.

Is there a policy or something else that controls this behaviour? if so
could someone point me as to where abouts it is, I have looked through the
defualt domain policy, and the site policy but cannot see anything regarding
this.

Thanks, Andrew

Use gpresults.exe to see what policies are affecting the machine. If one of
the DCs are 2003, you can use GPMC Resulting Set of Policies to determine
that. Then check iin those policies for this section and you can see all the
related settings for the start menu.:
User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu And Taskbar.

Hi Ace, thanks for the reply...

Not sure if I explained myself well then. The user has the option to
shutdown on the start menu, but when the shut down windows dialouge box
appears, there is no option to shut down, only logoff. sorry for any
confusion.

Sounds like the user Rights Assignment of Shutting down the machine has been
removed for those users. Check your Domina policy in the security
settings->User rights Assignments.

Thanks, it's set to 'not defined', would this not stop administrators doing
it aswell?

If it's not defined then everyone has the ability to shutdown the system. I'm
not sure off hand what else would cause the behavior you are experiencing.

I agree other than a policy set, which you described in your previous post
under User Rights Assignments.

This is a Group Policy setting in AD. I don't remember it off hand, but I'm
sure others will point you to it. Be careful in setting this. If you make
the change globally, users will be able to shut down a server that they are
logged onto. Our users quickly got used to the restriction that they had to
log off and then shut down their workstations....

Could somone confirm if this behaviour by default then? I cannot see any
policy set anywhere regarding not letting shuting down the system. Anyone
shed any more light?
