User Accounts problem

When I click on User Accounts in control panel I get a blank untitled
notebook screen with the following error message. The filename, directory
name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

Has anybody got any ideas?

I am using XP Pro with SP2 installed. Everything else appears to work ok.

I ran SFC /SCANNOW to check system files but no errors came up.

Type this in Start/Run dialog.

cmd /c assoc .hta=htafile

If that does not help you run the HTA applets like User Accounts etc, then,
open Windows\System32 folder and note down the file-size for mshta.exe. Post
the info here.

I tried advice below, no change.

mshta.exe is missing.

I have MSHTA.EXE-331DF029.pf located in C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch and a blank
mshta notebook file in C:\WINDOWS\system32

I have found the problem.

I had downloaded and ran HTAstop on the advice of some magazine article and
that was what it was. Silly me, meddling when I do not have enough knowledge.

Thanks for initial reply.

Yes, that's the cause. Extracting a new copy of mshta.exe, and repairing the
association for .hta helps in any case.
