When I go to Control Panel - User Acounts I get an error message that says
'Out of Memory'. No options appear in the User Accounts window.

I haven't looked at User Accounts since forever so this may or may not be
useful information, but... I was in the process of trying to work out Remote
Desktop on my computer which I recently upgraded to XP Pro from the Home
edition.

Any ideas?

1st,thier actually is no "upgrade" from xp home to xp pro,the "upgrade" is
specifically for older windows OS.One can install pro from home but this
"requires" a clean install of pro (format the hd,while booting to xp pro cd
for
installation). As for "out of memory" the "upgrade" will cause all kinds of
problems
with the OS,but you might open event viewer for details, then again, you may
simply be "out of memory".....

Here we go again with Andrew E., the resident troll and his ridiculous
and wrong information.

To the OP: Unfortunately, we don't really have enough information about
your computer to give you focused help and that isn't a usual error
message.

What is the virus/malware status of the machine? If you think it is
clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

If the machine is clean, you might want to run the System File Checker:
Start>Run>sfc /scannow [enter]

Since you now have XP Pro, can you create a user by going to
Administrative Tools (in Control Panel), then Computer Management, then
expland Local Users and Groups. Click on the Users folder in that
category and use the Action>New User to see if you can make a test
account.

I ran avast! before performing the upgrade. I meant to run webroot
spysweeper also, but forgot. I always have Windows Defender on (not sure it
ever really does anything, but...).

I'll run Spysweeper and also checkout your link.

Thanks for the reply.

Poor Andrew. If he only did the least amount of research and trial
before he posts he might get it right once in a while. His XP Home to
XP Pro upgrade lunacy has been debunked so many times that one has to
wonder if he isn't just a fictional character, a joke made up by bored
Microsoft employees who want to see who can make up the most ridiculous
advice for a good laugh at the expense of hapless computer users!

Bill Gates himself could go to Andrew's house and bring the necessary
software disks and show Andrew how easy it is to upgrade XP Home and the
very next day Andrew would post his usual bunk. If only he would post
his link where Microsoft says that his information is correct, as I see
it he probably read about XP Home and XP Pro x64 and he can't figure it out!

I don't think he's "poor Andrew" because he's been doing this for a long
time. Many, many people have tried to deal with him honestly and kindly
in the beginning to set him right about a lot of his answers (not just
this one). Those of us who are regulars in the newsgroups gave him the
benefit of the doubt - misguided but not malicious - in the beginning.
Since he will never respond to postings and continues to post advice
that at best is wrong and at worst is destructive, we really consider
him a dangerous troll. Like all trolls, this attention probably makes
him happy.

The only reason I - and others - don't just killfile him is because so
much of his advice is dangerous and we want to make sure innocent
posters don't follow it.
