User Account Disappeared....XP Home

One of my user accounts have disappeared from the welcome screen and the user
accounts control panel applet, I can't access it. It seems to have gone this
way since I tried to make the account a Power User account (it was a
limited), I know now Home Edition doesn't do Power Users. The only thing is
when I list all user accounts using net user command, the missing account is
listed, but I can't seem to access it with other commands. I don't know if
that may have something to do with the account in question having a space in
it or not (I used someones full name......)
Is it possible to get this account back working ? As far as data is
concerned, well there wasn't really any files saved there, but i'd rather
delete it from the list (wherever that is stored) or get it back working,
than just having it stuck registered somewhere.

XP Home does not have the"Power Users" group to my knowledge.

Is the account prfile directory under the Documents and Settings folder? At
least you can salvage the files.

Judging by what you said (changing it to Power User in Home), I assume you
made the changes by typing "control userpasswords2" in the run command box. I
read in another bulletin about something that had to do with "control
userpasswords2" Unfortunately, what I did was click on "Properties" which
screwed me up in the same way you are.

What actually happened, was my account was changed to guest account
privliges, and deleted from the User Accounts Control Panel. The way I
recovered my system, was by logging in as "Administrator" (in safe mode) and
doing a system restore to the day before I accidentially made the changes.
So, think back to when you made the change in account privliges, and do a
restore to the day before. Everything should be back to normal.

Good luck,

Hi again, got an update on this. So far its still the same except I have
found it does actually work. Appears in the net user list, doesn't appear on
the welcome screen or the control panel users applet, BUT I can log in if I
tap CTRL/ALT/DEL twice at the welcome screen, providing the classic login
screen and I type in my account name and well, it works fine. Not sure what
to make of that, but I'd still like to get it back properly though. If this
completely stumps everyone else, how about some tips on how to remove such an
account without the use of the net user command (since as stated earlier that
won't work!).
Thanks for the help

Sorry about this (I should have put this in moments ago), but I just want to
highlight again that the account i'm trying to get currently has got a blank
space in it, so if anyone knows if the net user command has any problems with
such accounts, or any such issues, and knows of solutions to this (or not as
the case may be), I appreciate the help.

Put quotation marks around the name of the account.

For example,
net user "ACCOUNT NAME".

When you run this command make note of the groups listed under
"Local Group Membership".

Good luck

Now I'm getting somewhere, I took your advice Nepatsfan, with quotes and it
worked. I also paid special attention to the Local Group Membership and
checked other accounts while I was at it. Interesting results, while my
other accounts had some sort of entry (*users, *guest, *administrator) the
problematic one had no entry at all. Is this the problem I have ? I am
thinking possibly it is. Sorry to be a pain but how can I correct this,
bearing in mind its an XP Home OS, because I don't really know how to change
Group Memberships.

Keep in mind that you can only do this procedure if your logged
on with an account that is a Computer Administrator. If the
built-in Administrator account is your only option, you'll have
to boot into Safe Mode in order to access this account. Once
logged on with the correct type of account, do the following:

Open a command prompt window.

To make this account a limited account enter the following
net localgroup users /add "ACCOUNT NAME"

To make this account a Computer Administrator enter the
following
net localgroup administrators /add "ACCOUNT NAME"

Reboot and see if you now have access to this account.

Good luck
