Something of an odd issue with Vista Mail: I am unable to access one
particular newsgroup (a misc group). When I subscribe to the group it shows
"misc.newsgroup (50000)", where 50000 is the unread posts, in the left hand
tree panel but displays only "There are no items in this view" (show all
messages) in the preview pane. I've subscribed and unsubscribed; I've
removed, deleted and reset in Tools. I looked at the User / App Data /
Local path and there was no folder for this particular group, although there
were folders for groups I no longer read. I created a folder for the group,
but that didn't work either. I've deleted all news message rules, just in
case there was some glitch there. It is only for this one particular group
that this happens.

Any direction appreciated.

I don't think there is a newsgroup named "misc.newsgroup".
My ISP (AT&T) doesn't carry it.
If you have munged the actual name of that newsgroup, I
have no way of attempting to duplicate what you experienced.

This sounds like Windows Mail has recognized that the newsgroups
server you're using has recognized the server has unread 50000
messages in that newsgroup, but hasn't downloaded even the headers
of any of them yet. Try this: Right click on that newsgroup in the
left hand column, then click on Synchronization Settings, then
Headers Only (due to the large number of messages), then click on
some other folder with few messages (I use Drafts), then click on
that newsgroup again. It should now have loaded at least some of
the headers, so click on the lines for whichever of these messages
you want to download the body for. After this, you can click on
Tools, then Get Next 300 headers whenever you want another
group of headers; or Edit, then Mark All Read if you decide you
don't want to read any more of the messages for which you've
already downloaded the headers. Once you've done this for
headers as far back as you care to read, click on Edit, then Catch
Up; you may then want to right click on the newsgroup, click on
Synchronization Settings, then New Messages Only, so that it will
no longer try to download even the headers of the old messages,
but will download the new messages it finds.

I had no trouble subscribing to that newsgroup, and messages
downloaded normally. Sounds like your news server is having a
problem.

You and everyone else in the world. Hence my particular question.
Sounds like your news server is having a
problem.

What problem would my newsserver have that would cause Windows to not create
a folder called misc.writing in the User / App Data / Local path on my C
Drive?

Sorry, I have no idea, since you're the first one in the 22
months I've worked here to come up with that specific problem.
If you think your mail client (Windows Mail) is at fault, try
Windows Live Mail: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview .
If it turns out not to fill your needs, merely uninstall, and WM
will be back just like before.

It's all pretty baffling, no doubt. If you would, one last question: what
does the winmail.fol file do? As I said, I created a file folder in Apps for
the ng in question, because there wasn't one. But the one I created has no
..fol file, as do all the other ng files. Any harm in me copying one of the
other .fol files into there, see if it helps, or are they particularly
associated with the other folders. TIA.

I believe winmail.fol is an index to all the files that belong
in that folder. Copying one from somewhere else will not work.
