Hi,

I have always used sfc /scannow with WinXP but with SP1.I have tried to do
the same with another PC with SP2,and it looked fine while it was doing the
operation, but when i tried to restart the pc it wouldnt work properly.I have
no idea if this is because that pc had SP2,but both pc's are laptops with
"recovery cd's",and it worked fine on the laptop with SP1.
Can sfc /scannow be used on a pc with SP2?

TIA

Yes, it can. Try making a SP2 slipstreamed version of Windows XP.

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming (integrating) SP2
into XP easier:

Thanks for that, but in my case, the version of WinXP on my lap top "recovery
cd" comes with SP2 in it....so will sfc /scannow work with my version winXP
with SP2 on it ? I dont dare try it,without some proper advice.

thanks

or do you mean use sfc /scannow with a slipstreamed version of winXP with
sp2 on it? I am completely unfamiliar with the slipstreamed .........

thanks

but it wont have the drivers for my laptop if i use the usual retail version
of winxp with a SP2 slipstreamed version of Windows XP.
Otherwise,is it OKAY to do sfc /scannow with the winXP with sp2 on my
recovery cd,or will it make my laptop unuseable and in need of a windows
reinstallation,
which was what happened last time??
It seems that not a lot of people use sfc /scannow,but it has always worked
well for me......

I advised you to get a "slipstreamed" disk with XP SP2 on it, which you
would then install on a reformatted hard drive. Maybe a bit much, if you
have to copy a lot of files first.

When you try to run sfc /scannow on your laptop, do you get a prompt to
insert the Windows XP Pro CD? If so, then here is a workaround for that:

Check your computer for an I836 folder {likely either C:\WINDOWS\I386 or
C:\I386}. If you have the I386 folder, it contains the original
installation files for your version of Windows XP {like the Windows XP CD}.
When asked for the Windows XP CD, browse to your I386 folder and SFC
/scannow will start using that folder.

The new installation files for SP2 are stored in a ServicePackFiles folder
in another I386 folder. Windows knows how to go to ServicePackFiles/I386 to
get new SP2 files.

If this is *not* your problem, then I think the best thing is to go ahead
with reformatting the drive and install from a slipstreamed XP CD.
