Use of a folder

I have a folder in windows that collects strangly named
files and I would like to find the reason for this
folder,C:\windows\prefetch.

Said is quite normal,
The folder is used as a sort of 'cache' by XP, whereby data relating to your
most commonly used programs is stored for quicker retrevial.

Some people recomend that the folder should be emptied occasionally.
As I understand, this would do little harm except that it would
(temporarily) take your (often used) programs to take a little longer to
load.

A. The Prefetch folder contains information regarding the optimal disk layout
of program files so that they launch quicker. You may delete all those files,
but XP will rebuild that folder so that your computer runs as efficiently
as possible.
