use net 1 time and no more

I had 98SE and had my OS upgraded to XP Pro by a upgrade CD. Ever since
then, I can only access the internet 1 time. After that, it will give me a
sign in server error. If I reboot, I can access 1 time and then no more
until a reboot. This has done it with MSN 9. After that, I loaded PeoplePC
with the same results except the error was that it could not find the server.
Both programs will dial the proper numbers, connect to the net, but not sign
in.

What is the exact error message you get? If you try using a regular dialup
internet session (not via MSN, PeoplePC, etc) do you have the same issues?
(not sure if this is an option for you).

Note - upgrades in place, particularly from Win9x/ME, can be problematic.
You may find it's easier just to back up your data and do a clean install of
WinXP - you can use your upgrade disk, and merely insert your Win98 CD when
prompted for the qualifying product. You will then know your system is
clean. Yes, this is a lot of work, but it's only a one-time hassle, and is
often worth it.

The shop that upgrade my OS found that the accelorator was what was causing
the problem. Whenever they had uninstalled it, everything worked fine when
re-installed, the problems started agin. I was having a similar problem with
98SE with the accelorator (several kernal32 errors). They eventually started
happening even when not on the net. The shop decided that the 98SE OS was
corrupted and suggested a clean install of 98SE + my XP update. They stated
that some systems do have problems with accelorator, is this true, or is
there some other problem to look at.

What accelerator are you talking about, specifically?
Why did they do a "clean install of 98" and then upgrade it to XP, rather
than going straight to XP? I would never recommend that. If you're going to
go through the hassle of a rebuild anyway, go straight to XP.

I tried the MSN accelorator and then the proxyconn. Both caused the same
errors. As far as the install, the shop may have gone dirrectly to XP if the
update CD would allow that with inofo from the 98SE CD.

Ah, so you mean software that allegedly speeds up a dialup connection? Well,
I don't use or recommend those, but I doubt they were the cause of the
problem.

It would. You just do a clean install & insert the 98 CD when prompted for a
qualifying product.
