USE FIREWALL

It seemes you have to switch on your firewall on windows
XP, for the internet connection - first, then you go to
windows update to download the newest updates. My PC
(with windows XP, 32bit) worked perfect after doing this.
Reboot, restore, and viruscontrol does not seem to work
for this...

Ok firewall is nice i remember turning it off but can not
find it to turn it back on. I had the worm. My worm was
on a 2 week old computer it was my husbands first
computer. Needless to say I had told him not to be
afraid of computer and then this happened. My question
was where can I go back and turn ON fire wall? Is the
firewall really needed

Yes absolutely a firewall is needed.
An operational firewall with Microsofts patch is what was needed to
prevent what has happened.
