Use CountIf() with symbols

I have a column were I insert certain symbols, for example X, and I need to
count how many of each symbol I have. I cannot use "X" in criteria, as Excel
doesn't recognize this as the X symbol. How can I solve this?

Have you enclosed the X in quotes in your formula?

=Countif(c1:C100,"X")

Use this it should work
=COUNTIF(A1:A4,"x")

Thanks to both of your for your replies.

I wasn't clear enough. Sorry for that, and I will try to explain it better.

I insert icons, like the ones you can now use in Conditional Formatting in
Excel 2007 (Icon Sets). So when I use the CountIf Function, it doesn't work
just using X, because I have a red X that it is an icon.
