use a macro in all presentations?

Is it true that you can only record a macro and use it in the one
presentation (unless you want to get into VB editing)? Is there not
somewhere (like the personal macro workbook in Excel) that you can store
macros to use on aNY presentation, for powerpoint? Cheers,

Hi Sally,
This is partly true. You can make a macro available to all the presentations
without creating an add-in by manually creating a menu button for the macro.
Once created whenever you click the button, PowerPoint will open the
presentation(if not already open) within which the macro is stored, run the
macro and close the file. For this to work you need to lower the macro
security level to Medium at least.

To create a button:
1. Open the presentation with the macro.
2. Select Tools | Customize...
3. Select the Commands tab.
4. Scroll down and select the to the Macros category.
5. From the adjacent column of command, drag and drop the macro you seek to
re-use on to the desired Toolbar.
6. Click on Ok to close the dialog.

Now you can invoke the macro from the Toolbar directly in other
presentations.

Ideally this should be hosted within an add-in however the above procedure
will work fine if distribution is not a criteria.

PowerPoint add-ins are essentially macros that are stored with the program
(so may be used on any presentation file). These do not require a high
degree of VBA skills to convert, you could probably learn it in a weekend.
PowerPoint macros, are stored with the presentation file (so may only be
used when the file is loaded).

You can get around this by loading your file (with the macros), then using
these macro on any another loaded presentation file.

many thanks for both replies. I will try that.
I can't understand why macros in powerpoint can't be made global as they are
in Excel and Word.

Cheers,

How would "hosted within an add-in" be done? I have 8 macros in a
presentation. On my computer I have a custom toolbar that I have placed these
macros on (as buttons) and I have made custom button faces. I'd like to
distribute the toolbar, macros and button faces out to a program team. I even
tried recording a macro while I went through the motions of creating the
toolbar, etc. thinking everyone could run the top level recorded macro to
create the toolbar for them on their individual computers and that didn't
work either.
