Hello
I have a customer with a problem installing an HP 1610 all in one
printer.

According to HP Support, they believe that the file usbscan.sys is
corrupt.

After all the time they spent, it looks like we have no alternative
but to do something about the file.

Can the file be re-extracted or is it derived from the Windows
installation?

I am really asking if I need to FDisk, etc.

I appreciate any and all assistance.

Thanks
Joe

Hi,

General USB Troubleshooting in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310575

It includes instructions on how to replace/extract copies of system files.

Thanks for the note and the time.
I had read the article and reread it after seeing your post. However,
i still cannot determine if the file is one that is compiled/derived
or the same for all systems.
I did not see where the article spoke to replacing/extracting files.

hate to ask for more help on turkey day.

Hi,

Open device manager from the System applet/hardware tab, and expand the USB
branch, right click the controller and select properties. Click the driver
tab, then click on driver details. Make note of the files listed here, they
are the driver files in question. Now open Windows Explorer to
C:\windows\system32\dllcache and locate those files, then delete or rename
them. To expand new copies, start/run msconfig, click on "expand file"
(general tab)

File to expand: <file name here>
From: X:\I386
To: C:\Windows\system32

Where X is whatever letter is assigned your CD drive (you need your WinXP CD
for this), change it accordingly. If your system was preinstalled, you may
find this instead on the hard drive under C:\Windows\I386 or simply C:\I386.
If so, change the "from" line accordingly. This assumes a default
installation to C:\Windows. If your installation is in a different folder,
such as C:\Winnt, change the "To" path accordingly. Reboot when finished.

Thanks for the details.I will be there on Monday, unfortunately.
I take it from your note that the usbcan.sys file is one that does not
change after the original install--and that Microsoft has not updated
or changed it via their update cycles.

Again, I appreciate the post.

Hi,

Sorry, I meant to mention that too, that you will need to check the
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles folder to see if a more recent version is
available for each of them. If there is, change the expansion point to point
to it.
