USB to Serial connection

Is there a way to configure a USB port for a Serial connection? I have an old
hardware device (Singer embroidery machine) and software (DOS) which needs a
Com1 connection. I have a cable which will convert a Serial connector to a
USB plug, and the software will run in a DOS Window. There is no provision
in the software to use a different connection. It works fine on an old
Windows 95 machine, but I would like to run it from my laptop which has six
USB ports.

Thanks

So, when you attach the USB cable, what is it's COM port
number in a DOS box? ( Note: be sure to start 16-bit command.com,
not just the XP command window! )
Type at tre dos prompt: mode.com com1:
What will be output?
If still not sure, try to run any DOS terminal program and connect
to another machine.

I hate to say this, but it's probably best to leave it run on the win95
machine. It's highly specialized.

However, there is a faint hope that Singer supports their high end
products for extended periods. You could see if there is updated
software and/or usb/serial conversion cables that will work with your
machine.

Sounds like it could be hairy problem. Dos 6 and 7 can't communicate
natively with the USB bus. So, even if you had hardware such as a USB to
serial com port adapter, the 3rd party software has no way of communicating
with the port. They do sell serial port adapters, but not sure how this
would work with XP or Win95 or msdos, and your 3rd party software.
Copy all below and put in address of your browser.
