usb to ide device

Apologies for the x/multiple post.

I'm trying to get an external usb to ide 'caddy' thing (akasa integral
high speed usb 2 interface for 5.25 ide device) to work. here's the setup:
win 2k, pIII 866, 512 ram. 2 internal hds as follows:
hd1 = 20gb (partitioned into c, d and e)
hd2 = 200gb (one big f drive)
the 2 hard drives are on one ribbon to the m/b (primary ide slot or
something)

then i have a dvd writer (drive i).

the 200gb is an upgrade - prior to which i had another 20g hd
which was also partioned (f, g and h). i guess this might explain why the
dvd is assigned the letter 1, not g.

now, here's the thing. if i shove a cd drive into this usb to ide thing,
it gets picked up as a device and works great. however, when i try
putting in another hd, it also gets picked up/detected but i can't read or
write to the hd. it shows up in device manager but not under the
'manage' tool (when i right click my computer). i've tried changing
jumper settings but this seems to make no difference. I've also tried
working backwards so that i have 2 20gb hds (c, d, e, f, g, h). but once
again, when i shove another hd into the akasa usb to ide caddy thing, it
gets picked up as a plug and play device, and in device manager but i cannot
see it in my computer.

hope it makes sense...

any advice, greatly appreciated.

Run Disk Management snap-in (diskmgmt.msc) and if the disk is listed as
Foreign - import it.

thanks for that but i had tried that already. the usb/ide drive doesn't show
up under disk management; but does in device manager. and like i said, when
i shove a cd drive in, no probs at all. this is driving me nuts...

Does it have any error code associated in Device Manager?

Have you tried Uninstalling it in Device Manager and rebooting?

thanks - did try to restart with dev connected but didn't help. have
since been back to supplier who also tried setting it up on one of
their machines running win 2000 and guess what? same problems - it's an
'issue' with win 2000, apparently. strangely enough, works fine with
win xp, for some reason.

anyway, thanks to all
