USB serial port

My laptop doesnt have a serial port so i use a usb /serial cable. This works
fine but i have 1 problem. When i connect the cable is doesnt always set up
with the same com port #, could be com 8 today or com 6 tommorrow. How can i
keep the cable on the same com # whenever it is detected?

Any info would be appriciated.

Are you "always" re-connecting the cable to the same USB port?

This seems to be "common" with cheap USB to serial cables. Name brands
usually have "better" drivers.
