My computer recoginzes my usb port but it won't assign it a letter, so the
way I have to get use my jump drive is by going into disk management. It
shows up then I assign it a letter temporarly. I've reinstalled windows xp
but still have the same problem. The only removalble storage divices that
are recognized are A for the floppy disk and drive D. Can anyone help me?

You need to install the software for the external drive, before
connecting the external drive to the USB Port, first. Thou, some support for
external drives are built-in into Windows XP. If your External Drive came
with a CD, with Software, then install the Software first. Reboot and
connect the External Drive to the USB port.

There are reports that a failed installation of the
daemon tools V4 can cause this effect.
If you have a failed install of the daemon tools V4,
then this fix shall work:

- switch in safe mode...hit ESC when trying to load sptd.sys
- use sptdinst_x86.exe remove....if it says that no sptd drivers
installed there is no problem....go to the next step
- use sptdinst_x86.exe add
- it will ask you to restart the computer after they are installed
- restart in normal mode...install daemon 4.03 and it works!!!!! it
will not ask you to restart after installation.
