USB ports not working

I have a problem with USB ports setup. Device manager reports:

"The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver."

No amount of re-installing makes any difference, auto re-install, manual
re-install all result in the same problem. If I delete the devices and
do a rescan, XP recognises the USB devices but the driver install always
ends in the same error.

The USB ports used to work fine but now they don't. I installed XP on a
spare hard disk and the install went fine. USB ports were recognised,
installed and worked properly. I don't want to do a complete re-install
on my main hard disk because I have a heavily customised setup.

I feel that there may be a need to delete some registry entries and
files to get the USB ports to re-install correctly.

This is racking my brain. Any help will be much appreciated.

Do you have access to the CD-ROM installation disc that came with your
Motherboard?

Peter

I do and I have tried this many times with the same error. I have tried
to download different drivers without luck.

The thing is that it used to work once upon a time and also I have
successfully set up a new XP installation on a spare hard disk with USB
working fine.

Therefore it must be a problem with XP setup on the current hard disk.

Any ideas?

I do have a USB 2 driver on the CD that came with the motherboard

The USB 1.1 driver is contained in the WinXP software. Its a VIA driver
which apparently is not available thru VIA because of licencing issues
(or something like that).

not sure exactly the full story behind your problem, or if this finds you
having already fixed your problem, but one area to check is your BIOS and
make certain your settings reflect USB being enabled. Check Device Manager
as well to see if any problems exist with your USB controllers. RightClick
MY COMPUTER>PROPERTIES>HARDWARE TAB>DEVICE MANAGER>EXPAND USB CONTROLLERS
NODE. Exclamation marks or red X's are indicative of a problem.
