usb pen drives - sometimes install sometimes not

Hi

We would like our users to use their usb pen drives on our system as it
would be the best way for them to move large files between school and
home. We can use software restriction policies to stop them running
programs so we're happy for the students to plug them in.

However some pen drives will not work without attempting to install
drives on the workstations, as we have domain users in local power users
~ rather than local administrators this will not work. It seems to be the
ones that install as 'usb hubs' rather than 'mass storage' whicm present
the problem

Does anybody know a way to get round this, we wouldn't (ideally) want
them installing any local hardware but we do want pen drives.

Which OS are we talking about?

When you say "attempting to install drives on the workstations", are you
talking about the USB drive appears to add a drive letter which then
disappears when the device is removed?
Or are you talking about a different behaviour...???

Duh!
OS is winXP pro with SP2
Yes, I mean the type which appears as a drive letter when inserted then
disappears when removed. As far as I tell the drivers are hard-coded
into the pen drive and XP is attempting to automatically install it.

Well, actually, it's XP that's handling that...

It's like an auto-mount so the pen drive is readily accessible to the user
(more M$ automatic stuff for ease of use... comments reserved...)

AFAIK, shouldn't be a problem for you...
The device disappears when removed...

Is there something of concern to you that I'm missing here?

Yes, some types of pen drives will not install on the workstation unless
the user is an administrator on the local workstation. They are all
power users (we have eh-hem 'legacy' software) but this does not give
them the rights. We WANT them to be able to use their pen drives, but
don't want to make them local machine admins

Ah, now I get it; the problem is that certain models of pen/thumbs won't
install automatically on their own...

Right off the top of my head, I don't have the answer...

I must leave and be out the rest of the day; perhaps the resident wizards
can answer your question quickly. If not, I'll see if I can't discover the
answer when I return later tonight.

You have my true email address; if you care, I'll tell you privately about
the coming events of today and tomorrow... When that's cleared, I'll help
you solve this if you haven't already. See ya...

Hi Andy.

I don't know for sure if this will help but it is worth a try for those
problem devices. Add the power users to the user right for "eject removable
media" and "add and remove device drivers" to see if it helps. I can't think
of anything else offhand that might help. --- Steve
