USB Optical Mouse freezing after XP Pro re-install

Hi, I re-installed XP Pro a few days ago, and I have my system just about
where I want it again, However now I am having a problem with a freezing
mouse pointer. I have it set up exactly the same way now as before the
re-install, I didn't change a thing, and the mouse worked fine since I
installed XP Pro the first time last December. I have an HP Pavillion 7970
that originally came with Win ME. I am using the USB optical mouse and USB
keyboard that came with it, both mouse and KB have "HP" on it. Now,
randomly, but seemingly often after opening applications or clicking on
something, the mouse pointer just freezes wherever it's at. The keyboard
keeps functioning when the mouse freezes. . I have the mouse plugged into
the USB port in back of the keyboard. I have the keyboard plugged into the
PC via it's USB cord and a USB extension cable. When the mouse freezes, I
noticed the red light under the mouse is dim. If I wait, sometimes it
becomes fucntional after about 2 minutes just sitting idle, but often not. I
found out if I either disconnect the mouse from the back of the keyboard and
re-connect it, or I disconnect the keyboard's extension cable apart where
it's joined in the middle and reconnect it, the mouse will light up bright
on the bottom and work again, for a while, sometimes OK a day or two,
sometimes going bad every five minutes..I already went into the Device
Manager -> USB Controller -> USB Root Hub ->Properties ->Power Management,
and unchecked the box to allow the computer to turn off the device to save
power, following a post I read that doing that may help, but it didn't. I
have 2 Root Hub entries so I unchecked the box under each. The Device Mgr
also says the mouse is working properly and if I try to re-install the
driver, it tells me the best driver is already installed, Any help
appreciated. Hopefully I won't have to re-install XP as it took me a week to
get everything back where I want it again. There has to be a better fix.
Thanks in advance,

Dan

I don't have an answer for you, just an observation. How come all of
the mouse problems go unanswered? I've read several messages regarding
problems with WindowsXP and mouse problems. No one seems to have an
answer!

Baker:
At least this is an answer. Do a "find" on "mouse". You'll notice that
90% go unanswered.

Danny: I just bought an optical mouse for my laptop with a scroll lever
for 9.95. The name is miMICRO and it is a USB device. I installed it
with the drivers which came with it. Works like a charm with XP Pro. Do
a search with Google. The site for the company is www.Mi-Products.com.

Thanks all for responding, I went out yesterday and bought a Logitech MX 310
mouse and it's been working great. I could then physically investigate the
problem HP mouse and I did indeed find a problem where the wire entering the
mouse must be getting frayed. I played with the wire and got it to freeze
each time I moved it a certain way. It was a bad mouse, but the problem
wasn't readily apparent.
