I recently noticed something that looks like an error while using my
USB based externel micro drive "error -71". The drive itselfs appears
to be working fine, but I don't really know how to read into it
..
the drive I have is an Hitachi even though I am having some problems
letting it saying by itself:
..
sh-3.1# smartctl --all /dev/sdb
smartctl version 5.36 [i686-pc-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-6 Bruce
Allen
Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/

Device: Generic USB Disk Version: 9.02
scsiModePageOffset: response length too short, resp_len=4 offset=4
bd_len=0A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more
'-T permissive' options.
..
this are the messages I see right after I plug the drive.
..
usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 3
usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71
usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
scsi1 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 3
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
Vendor: Generic Model: USB Disk Rev: 9.02
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
SCSI device sdb: 78140160 512-byte hdwr sectors (40008 MB)
sdb: Write Protect is off
sdb: Mode Sense: 03 00 00 00
sdb: assuming drive cache: write through

What is happening? Is it an OS or hardware thing?
..
Am I safe? How could I fix that?

From where did you get the info about this Hitachi "error -71"?
..
Say I can't or it is a little annoying because I will have to do each
time I boot up (I am using knoppix) is the drive just slower or am I
somehow damaging its hardware?
