hi - hope someone can help me with this

I have a digital camera which was working fine on an W2K machine. Now I have a new machine with a clean install of W2K SP4 but cannot get the camera working with it. Whenever I try to connect the camera or install the driver for it, the Found New Hardware and Upgrade Device Driver wizards both show the error "The installation failed because a function driver was not specified for this device instance". The device is shown in Device Manager under Universal Serial Bus controllers as "USB Device" with a yellow exclamation mark. Also under Universal Serial Bus controllers there is no USB Mass Storage Device listed - should there be

thanks for any help anyone can provide..

You now have a clean install of W2K. Okay, but did you ever install the
driver for the USB camera so the OS can actually understand how to
communicate with this device? The typical installation order is FIRST
you install the driver and THEN you attach the USB device.

OK - in case anyone else has this problem - the solution (provided by the support people from Fuji the manufacturers of my camera) was to plug the camera into the *rear* USB port rather than the *front* USB port

Why this should make any difference, I have no idea. But it did.

You have a bad USB port on the front, that's why. The rear USB port is
probably at the backpanel plate and it is affixed to the motherboard so
there's no chance it got wired wrong. However, for the front USB ports,
they run from a header (8 pins, I think) to the USB connector on the
case or panel on the front. Usually the ground and voltage wires get
hooked up okay but the USB- and USB+ leads might be switched.

Who built your new machine? Since you don't mention brand and model, my
guess is you built it or a friend or family member built it for you.
Apparently they didn't bother to test all the ports to do a proper
burn-in before giving you the computer.

Could be your BIOS isn't setup properly. Maybe the USB ports (for the
front) are not enabled. A separate controller chip would be used for
each pair of USB ports. Check that you don't have some of them
disabled. Also check if all are configured for "V1.1+V2.0" USB support.
Maybe your device won't work under USB 1.x but the USB port is only
configured for USB 1.0/1.1 support (or that's all it supports but we
can't tell since you haven't mentioned your motherboard brand and
model). The may be several BIOS settings for USB. You'll have to
figure out if they are correctly configured.

Do any other USB devices work in those front USB port(s)? Are any of
them USB 2.0 devices (which, I assume, was your USB camera)?
