Is an external 2,5 " drive with USB 2.0 interface compatible with USB 1.1
on the desktop?

Though it will probably work,if you are transferring data you will find that
whatever might
have taken a few minutes with a USB2 connection
will take many hours on USB1.1
So I'd definately put a USB2 card in the desktop machine
