USB HD quirkyness

I have a Seagate 250 gig IDE that I put in a Anvesome USB enclosure,
this enclosure came with the HD, so it should be a good match. I only
turn on this drive when I want to backup my 3 networked computers.
I've had it for about a year and about maybe 10 times over the last
year I've gotten errors that scandisk couldn't fix. I ran CHKDSK from
the command prompt each time and fixed the errors.
About 3-4 times in the last year I've gotten serious errors like
"delayed write failed" and the HD was erased. I would get a prompt
from XP "format HD?".

Obviously I need something that's more reliable for backing up 3
computers, so I'm now trying my WD 250 IDE in the same USB enclosure
to see if that's more reliable. I guess it could be a faulty USB
enclosure or just an incompatibility between the USB enclosure and the
Seagate HD. My first USB enclosure was far more quirky and finicky.
Some HD's wouldn't even show up in it and it seems like there were
other problems also, so I've been mostly just using the newer
enclosure.

I've always had "optimize for quick removal" for the USB HD so I
wouldn't have to use the "Safely remove hardware" routine. I just
simply turn the power on or off on the USB enclosure. I wonder if
that's creating errors.

I'm using XP SP2 on my Athlon 64 3200. Can anyone enlighten me in
regard to this USB HD quirkyness. This computer also has Firewire, I'm
beginning to wonder if I should get a Firewire enclosure instead. If
so, any recommendations or thoughts on this subject would be
appreciated.

Make sure the Logical Disk Manager Administrative Service is set to automatic
and is indeed started.. Partition & Format with Disk Management..? I don't
use the drives OEM disk managers, use their diagnostics to check the drive
though..
Update your USB drivers if you haven't already from your computers or mobos
OEM site..
