USB HD not recognized

Was operating Win98, have recently upgraded to XP. Unable
to plug and play buslink usb hard drive and have it
acknowledged. Software that came with HD has drivers for
98 and 2000 but not for xp. There was a warning not to
install as it had not clearned testing or something like
that to show compatible with XP. D'loaded driver that
buslink offers to be compatible with my HD but the HD
does not register as a drive. Device manager shows big
question mark beside 'other devices' when I turn the
power on the HD to on.

I would really appreciate any suggestions or help. (be
kind as I need you to speak elementary computer. *S*)
Thanks..

USB devices need to have the drivers installed into XP before the physical
unit is connected to the PC.

In Device Manager, remove all/any entries for the hard drive unit.
Disconnect the USB connection from the PC
Reboot
Make sure the correct XP drivers are installed.
Follow directions in the drivers setup screen, if any.
If required, reboot XP before connection USB HD to PC.
