USB Flash Drive Shows up in Programs but not in Explorer

When I plug in any USB flash drive that I have into my XP computer I cannot
see the drive within My Computer. Instead I have to open up a program (e.g.
Excel) and then it appears.

The only way I can get it to work sometimes is to reboot my computer
entirely and then I can see the device. This does not work 100% of the
time.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks...
 
Check to see if the USB flash drive shows up in Disk Management and check to
see if D.M. assigns a drive letter to it.
