Im relatively new to the USB flash disk. I have one, works great.

Then okay time to take the thing out. click on "safely remove device"

Stop USB disk Volume Flashdisk E: thing? A dialog box asks. yes, turn it
off now. Then a new error message appears. It says:

Volume Flashdisk E: thing cannot be stopped right now, it doesnt feel like
stopping. Why dont you come back later and ask then?

Now since when did computers get so emotional? no, your USB flash disk is
relaxing now, it doesnt feel like stopping. Go take a walk or something and
try later. Or how about it just asking for cash, I dont feel like stopping
now, but five bucks might change my mind. Okay here is five bucks. well...
thats getting me in the mood but I dont know. okay ten bucks. deal! you
can safely remove the USB disk now.

Try the USB Mass Storage flusher at
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Secure-cleaning/USB-Mass-Storage-Flusher.shtml
"USB Mass Storage Flusher - Simply and light-weight application that flushes
the file-system cache on a specified removable drive i.e. USB Mass Storage
pen-drive, or flash-disk, ... It prevents data loss against the removing of
the mass storage device connected to a computer. " It might be your solution
in for disconneting the USB drive without corrupting data on it.

Thanks Bill

I will check into this.. Is it a program approved by Microsoft?

this looks exactly like the thing i need, flush out the thing and stop
everything, Im ready to close it, dont ask me for more info

How about turning off write caching on this disk? The reason you can't
remove it is because there is cached data not yet written to it. This is to
stop you corrupting the data on the USB disk.

Computer Management / Disk Management / right click on the USB drive in the
lower right-hand window and drag down to Properties.Click on the Hardware
tab and then click on the Properties button click on the Policies tab and
uncheck Enable write caching on the disk.

I know this is painful, but you only need to do it once (assuming you only
have one USB drive). This is an example of an out-and-out stupid bit of
software. Why can't stopping the drive in the System Tray just flush the
cache automatically when you stop it?

From archive...

Usually at least one open handle to the drive prevents
the save removal.
Try to discover who has an open handle to your USB drive:

Get Sysinternals ProcessExplorer
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html

Go to 'Find'->'Find Handle' and enter your drive letter like
U: and click 'Search'.

Then it lists all processes that hold open handles to your drive.

That's not true.

That's exactely what Windows does.

Hi Uwe,

Even if I am wrong, it is still pretty stupid to have to go and get a
third-party tool so you can remove a USB drive when you want to isn't it?

Cheers,
Bill

Hi Bill,

yes, absolutely. If they are able to determine that
there are open files it should be not too difficult
to show the user which processes cause this...

Hi Uwe,

I guess my point was why should it be necessary for your average user to
have to do this just so they can unplug their USB drive? The stop USB
device *should* be all one has to do to remove a drive. Would not be
rocket-science MS to make this happen, I'm sure.

Cheers,
Bill
