I'd like to use a USB drive instead of a floppy disk drive
under DOS 6.0. Has anyone else done this? = RM

Hi Rick,

Never tried putting DOS without third party tools but it should be possible.
1. Plug USB disk.
2. Boot device from DOS floppy.
3. use format X: /S on USB disk. (X: replace with volume of USB)

It should work.

So you are thinking that the POST code in the BIOS and system ROM will
recognize the USB device and 'mount' it. Can't wait to try it! - RM

Actually I'm not thinking anything. I can boot XPe and pass all FBA phases on USB disk. So this means that today's BIOS-es are
capable of booting from USB :-)

You will have to make sure your BIOS got USB boot support to enumerate and configure your USB device on boot.
Just for instance:
http://www.gensw.com/pages/prod/fwapp/usbboot.htm

Also, depending on your boot speed requirement you will need to make sure that USB 2.0 "High-Speed" Boot option is also supported by
BIOS. AFAIK, Phoenix and latest AWARD BIOS-es have it.

For some more BIOS options available, look here: http://www.eltan.com/biosopt.htm

Hi - I've tried to create a bootable disk on key (2GB) and load it with XPE
or XP. While I can boot the DOK with Linux and FreeDOS, I have failed to get
XP to install. The explanation about formating the USB drive from a DOS
console using the /s option worked for me today.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

D.
