USB Disk Encryption...

Ian Edmont

Hi,

Looking for some recommendations to enable encryption for my new USB flash
drive.

I have tried TrueCrypt which requires Administrator priveleges.

Any recoomendations for a freeware app that doesn't need admin rights as
TrueCrypt does?

Many thanks.

Ian Edmont.

Hi Ian

I'm not familiar with the admin issue, but from
http://www.truecrypt.org/faq.php, the second option might be of help:

Q: How can I use TrueCrypt on a USB flash drive?

A: You have two options:

Encrypt the entire USB flash drive. However, you will not be able run
TrueCrypt from the USB flash drive.

Create a TrueCrypt file container on the USB flash drive (for
information on how to do so, see the chapter Beginner's Tutorial, in
the TrueCrypt User Guide). If you leave enough space on the USB flash
drive (choose an appropriate size for the TrueCrypt container), you
will also be able to store TrueCrypt on the USB flash drive (along with
the container - not in the container) and you will be able to run
TrueCrypt from the USB flash drive (see also the chapter Traveller Mode
in the TrueCrypt User Guide).

I don't know what the admin problem is exactly.

You can use a progam like Universal Extractor
(http://wiki.freebiewiki.org/index.php?title=Universal_Extractor) to
unzip the contents of the truecrpyt setup file. This way you don't need
admin rights to install truecrypt on your computer or usb drive.

then you start the file (located in the "Setup Files" folder) called
"TrueCrypt Format.exe". You can then select weather you want the whole
device encrypted or just create an encrypted file that contains your
data. If you like you can also partion your device in 2 or more logical
drives. But I don't know if that works if you don't have admin rights.

After that you can use "truecrypt.exe" to mount your file or device.

You could try the usual 'lite' versions of commercial stuff

crytainerle
http://www.cypherix.com/cryptainerle/

Remora USB Disk Guard Free
http://www.richskills.com/products/7/freeversion.asp

not tried this one but worth a look
OTFE
http://www.freeotfe.org/

or if you can accept encrypting single files, then try the windows version
of bcrypt
http://www.encryptsolutions.com/english/index.html
I know that this is portable because I use it on my USB flash drive.
