USB audio

Windows XP doesn't seem to be able to support USB speakers and microphones
on my system. I have a Logitech 4000 Pro Webcam with mic. The Webcam works
but Windows can't install a driver for the mic. I recently bought a USB
headset and Windows can't install that either.

I have a generic system:

Windows XP SP 2
Intel P4-1.5 GHz
512 MB memory.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Have you strictly follow the instructions for how to install the webcam
drivers?

Try as follows:

1. Download the latest XP compatible drivers from logitech.com and save it
to a specific folder.

2. go to add or remove program to remove the webcam drivers, after the
driver is removed, disconnect the webcam and then reboot the PC.

3. Check to ensure you have installed Direct X 9.0 or above before install
the new webcam drivers.

4. Temporary disable the antivirus software and then run the downloaded
drivers.
Connect the webcam when prompted. Follow the prompt top complete the
installation. You may need to reboot the PC to complete the installation.

5. Install other applications from the webcam CD.

Thanks. I did follow the instructions exactly as Logitech describes. It
seems to me that it is a Windows XP SP2 specific issue because I have
several USB audio devices and none of them work with my XP system. At work
they are fine on my ME machine. Unfortunately, I don't want to chat at work


What I think I need is a way to get XP to install the default USB audio
drivers somehow.

None of the devices I have, except the Webcam, came with a CD. They claim
that they are 100% Windows XP compatible and don't require a specific
driver.

Hi,

In this case, I would suggest you to disconnect any USB devices from the PC
including USB mice and keyboard (use PS/2 at this time). Then reboot the PC
in safe mode and login as administrator.
Go to device manager, double click the Universal serial Bus Controllers.
Right click on the XXX PCI to USB Open Host Controllers and click uninstall.
If you see XXX PCI to USB Enhanced Host controllers (this controller is for
USB2.0), uninstall it as well.

Reboot the PC, windows should found new hardwares and install the proper
drivers.
Go to device manager to ensure the Universal Serial BUs Controllers are
reinstalled and working properly.

Re-connect the USB devices each at one time to ensure each one is working
properly before connect the other devices. Try re-install the webcam drivers
in this way.

Hi Peter,

I will try what you have suggested on the weekend. I tried the device on a
friend's computer running XP and it installed and worked perfectly so I know
it is not the device that is the issue and not XP. It is curious, though,
that the device will not install properly on either of my XP boxes.

Anyway, I will try reinstalling the USB as you suggest and report back.

Hi Gerry,

When you updated your OS to SP2, the USB Controllers drivers might not be
updated at the same time due to unknown reasons and thus caused the problems.

Hope you can fix it and enjoy with the webcam.
BTW, you should download and use the latest XP drivers and applications from
logitech. Make sure you have installed Direct X 9 before install this driver.

I am sure there is a logical answer to my problem. I am going to reinstall
XP on my notebook computer and see if that works. I can do it safely because
it is my back up computer and it is not critical, just useful. Anyway, as I
said, this will have to wait until the weekend when I have some free time.

There is not necessary to re-install XP unless there are big problems on the
OS.
Format the harddisk and clean install XP should be the last resort.
Just follow my suggestion and I think it should work.

Peter,

I tried your advice twice today to no avail. It seems my version of XP is
different from everyone else's. I got the camera and mic to work fine on a
friend's XP computer but on my two computers the mic won't work. I have
other audio USB devices that don't work fully as well. None of them came
with a driver.

Sorry to hear that.
Can you post back the full details of your laptop?
The brand and model, spec and config.(including mobo BIOS and chipset
drivers), applications and drivers installed, etc. so that we can investigate
deeply on what's going wrong.
