Hello,
I heard that sometimes the powersupply of the USB connection on a PC fails
for a (very) short period of time. Is that true? Maybe only on some
motherboards, or some chipsets?

Thanks
Frank

I've never read this, but anything is possible I suppose. More likely
is demanding too much power. USB is rated at 5 volts at 0.5 amps or 2.5
watts - too little to power any HD except perhaps some laptop 2.5 inch
HDs. It is also possible to enable power saving mode on the USB ports
in the power management control panel.
