USB and Extrernal Maxtor drive

I've seen a couple of posts, but no answers. I'll try again...

I'm running W2K SP4 with all the latest updates. Its running on a Thinkpad
T22. I installed an external Maxtor drive. It seemed to be recognized
correctly. It has never worked on this machine. I connect the external drive
and it shows a drive letter but nothing on the drive.

Properties shows:

Properties>General shoes:0 used, 0 available
Properties>hardware shows Maxtor 6 L100P0 USB Device

The drive is known good. It works on another W2K SP4 machine.
It also works on another T22 Thinkpad.
The USB port works, a wireless mouse, keyboard and other gadgets work fine.

I've removed and re-installed all the USB drivers.

Is there any tool that will check the USB chain or a list of the pieces that
are needed to access an external drive? Or anybody that can point me in the
right direction?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

However good - if it were my machine, I should disconnect all USB's barring none
and then try to format the maxtor via USB. If you have forward facing ports,
boot machine with no USB at all and then plug in the maxtor and tell us what
happens.
Maybe even show us what happens on the event log.

I have the exact same issue with storing to an external Maxtor. Were you
able to resolve?
