could anyone pleaeeese help!!!!!!
Ive installed a USB 2.0 on my PC. All the drivers are
installed and when i go into device manager its there
telling me that ive got a USB 2.0 installed. The problem
is when i connect my CD RW drive (which is USB 2.0) a
message comes up that ive got a high speed device plugged
into a non high speed USB hub!!!!
When a message pops up saying click here to solve this
problem its telling me to try connecting it to another
port which is USB 2.0 compatible and shows me 4 spare
ports where i can put this, but its already in these
ports!!!!! ANY SUGGESTIONS?????

Yes. I had the same problem. The problem was a USB2.0 PCI card i bought, it
had a VIA chip on it.. The replacement i bought had an NEC chip and was made
by Belkin.. The hardware (believe it or not ) was the problem. I pulled the
original card and deleted everything in the Device Manager referring to
USB.. Installed the new card, cold booted and the whole thing came together
and worked after several weeks of messing with everything mentionable.
The most important part is to have SP1 installed.....IF you have an add-in
card that you bought with USB2 ports on it, what i did will solve your
problem.. If your USB2 ports are on the mobo (newer ones are) then try
deleting all references to USB in the Device Manager, one at a time, then
reboot and let XP Find and install what it needs.. Any additional drivers
etc that you may be tempted to install are NOT needed, do not install
them...
After you do this you should see 'enhanced usb controller' as part of the
listing in Device Manager.. If it 'ain't there, it won't work as
advertised....
Early on, Microsoft said something in theeir Knowledge Base about the
upcoming (at the time) USB2 standard and the comment was they would
'support' the NEC standard, which is the card i bought to replace the
original, as i said.. This may be the key, although i can't imagine why USB2
standards would not be 'standard', meaning you could use ANY USB2 card on
the market..

Am not saying that... IF you have service pack 1 installed and IF you have
checked all the other items i mentioned, and IF you do not see the
'enhanced' usb2.0 controller in device manager, it MAY be the card, is my
suspicion...My problem was for certain, the PCI card...The Belkin card,
although it cost me 3x what the cheapo card cost, solved the problem, so IF
you bought a cheapo card, like i did, you can be sure that is it.. I
searched the web for any and all info about the problem, and basically got
many opinions on this newsgroup and all of them came down to, Servcie Pack 1
installed and that was it.. There really is nothing else to look for, no
magic application that will solve the problem.. On a lark, i decided to buy
the new card and (saying to myself) this ain't gonna solve the problem, but
i'm gonna try it! I figured i was spending more $$ on just another USB2.
card, but it turned out my possibly silly move was the right one and i would
never have guessed the hardware was the problem, as i said previously...(it
only cost $14.95) you get what you pay for usually....

What card is it? Brand etc?....If you can afford another card, buy the
Belkin, it's $39.95 (ouch) but i would bet it would do the trick... One
further question; have you checked the BIOS to be sure it can use USB2 .. it
certainly (more than likely) does.....but it was a thought...

so basically the PCI card ive hust brought is no good!!!!

It may be just a matter of the drivers that were with the card. If you
have SP1 installed, try going to the controller in Device Manager,
double click, Drivers page and update drivers to see if it will do
better on the SP1 ones. that certainly proved to be the case with my
NEC chipset card.
